-2011 Bessie Awards
Celeb Teicher, winner of the 2011 Bessie Award Winner, is a 26- year- old tap, jazz, Lindy, and Swing dancer, who has been making a major splash in national news, most recently landing the cover of Dance Magazine as “The King of Old-School Cool.” He and his group, Caleb Teicher & Company, will launch White Bird’s 2019-20 Uncaged Series on October 17-19 at Portland State University’s Lincoln Hall. Performing a three-part bill that features Teicher’s unique blend of dance styles, the company of seven will dance to the music of jazz legends Ella Fitzgerald and Fats Waller, classical compositions by Johann Sebastian Bach, and various blues musicians. Deemed “one of the brightest lights in Tap, Lindy Hop and Swing dance today,” by The New Yorker, Teicher has received critical and audience acclaim for his fresh and innovative take on choreography, musicality and rhythm.
A duet, Small & Tall opens the evening, pairing unlikely measurements (one dancer is 4’ 10” and the other 5’ 10”) with incredible humor and heart by using a mashup of vernacular jazz, tap, modern , and even acrobatics. With costumes by Marion Talan and music recorded specifically for CT&Co by Peter Mintun and Tamar Korn, Small and Tall proves that when opposites attract, they blossom. Next is Variations, set to Bach’s Goldberg Variations, with Teicher employing Bach’s distinctive chord progression for each variation but stretching its capacity for expression with melodic variation, counterpoint, and rhythmic invention. In Variations, three dancers make the composition leap from its famed score, creating a new playground for interpretation. In Meet Ella, Caleb Teicher collaborates with one of the world’s most eminent swing and vernacular jazz dancers, Nathan Bugh. The duo utilizes jazz dance forms to glide towards, cut against, and trade with the Queen of Jazz, Ella Fitzgerald. Bringing new depth to Ella’s well-known catalogue, Caleb and Nathan stretch the boundaries and distill the essence of movement to jazz music.
Caleb Teicher began his dance career as a founding member of Michelle Dorrance’s celebrated company, Dorrance Dance, in 2011. Other favorite performance credits include The Chase Brock Experience, Syncopated City Dance Company, The Bang Group, Sally Silvers & Dancers, and West Side Story (Int’l Tour and London). Since founding CT&Co in 2015, Teicher’s creative work has expanded to engagements and commissions from The Joyce Theater, New York City Center, Works & Process @ The Guggenheim, The Kennedy Center (with Ben Folds & the National Symphony Orchestra), “Regina Spektor on Broadway”, and many others. Caleb is a 2019 New York City Center Choreographic Fellow, a 2019 Bessie Award Nominee for Outstanding Breakout Choreographer, a 2019 recipient of NEFA’s National Dance Project Production Grant, one of Dance Magazine’s 2012 “25 to Watch”, and a 2011 Bessie Award Winner for Outstanding Individual Performance. His work has been featured in publications including The New York Times, NPR, Forbes, Dance Magazine, Vogue, and Interview Magazine. Caleb continues to engage with dance communities as an instructor at international Tap and Jazz Dance festivals. He is a proud alum of the School at Jacob’s Pillow and the National YoungArts Foundation.
