ROMPER EL PISO “BREAK THE FLOOR”
World renowned tango dancer and choreographer Natalia Hills, original member of the worldwide hit Forever Tango, leads an exquisite 16-member ensemble of tango artists in Romper el Piso. Showcasing intricate footwork, partnering, sensuality, and drama of the classic tango, Tangueros del Sur transports audiences from its Afro-Argentine roots in working class districts of Buenos Aires to today’s modern ballroom. Onstage, master musicians on bandoneón, cello, guitar, piano, and percussion perform the rhythms and melodies of composers from Juan D’Arienzo to Astor Piazolla.
- Natalia Hills, born and raised in Buenos Aires, practiced her art under the watchful eye of her grandfather who gave her lessons after school. He would often say to her “romper el piso” or “break the floor” which inspired the title of this performance. She is descendant of three generations of tango artists.
- Natalia Hills, won a Tony award in 1997 for her choreography in Broadway’s Forever Tango.
- Hills has been featured on NBC’s Today Show, in a series of concerts with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, at New York University’s Skirball Center, at the Carnival Center for the Performing Arts in Miami, and many other venues. She is known as an international tango superstar and has become an important and established tango dancer, choreographer, and instructor.
- Romper el Piso was Declared of Cultural Interest by Argentina’s Secretary of the Nation Cultural Ministry. The work premiered for the first time at New York City Center in 2009.
