Artistic Director Wang Yuanyuan
Founded in 2008, Beijing Dance Theater is led by choreographer Ms. Wang Yuanyuan together with visual artists Tan Shaoyuan and Hanjiang. Ms. Wang prides herself in being rooted in Chinese traditions, while at the same time producing innovative, authentic, and thought-provoking contemporary dance works for the world stage. Beijing Dance Theater will make its White Bird debut with a compelling mixed repertory program showcasing the unique collaborative nature of the company between choreographer, dramaturg, sound score, and visual design.
– With “Best Choreographer” awards won in Bulgaria, US Jackson, Moscow, and
Shanghai International Ballet Competitions, Wang Yuanyuan has the most
international awards of such distinction of any Chinese choreographer.
– Tan Shaoyuan, the company’s Design Director and Set Designer is known for his
excellence in his set design, lighting design, and multi-media visual arts collaborating
with top directors and playwrights since 1999. He won the Grand Prix for stage
design in the China-Japan International Friendship Award.
– Han Jiang, the company’s Lighting Designer began his collaboration with Wang
Yuanyuan in 2004 after holding the position of lighting designer at the National Ballet
of China, developing a style described as “at once cool and creative, transforming
performance space with both liberty and precision.”
– Wang Yuanyuan was one of the main choreographers for the Opening Ceremonies of
the Beijing Olympic games in 2008.
