Announcing White Bird’s 2014-15 Season


White Bird is delighted to announce its diverse and highly musical 17th season. This upcoming season features newly commissioned works by Alonzo King and Danielle Agami, a British invasion by three of the most talked-about dance companies in the UK (all making Portland debuts), and a unique focus on music; from live blues, to classical, to jazz and even rock. Dance Theatre of Harlem will return to Portland after a 30-year absence.

Season subscriptions are now on sale, starting as low as $104 (4 shows, Uncaged) and $114 (6 shows White Bird Dance Series). This represents a 25%-29% savings on single tickets.


Diavolo (California)
Thu-Sat, OCTOBER 9-11, 2014   Newmark Theatre | 7:30pm
Dancers, gymnasts, rock-climbers and actors – that’s the remarkable make-up of Diavolo. Director Jacques Heim creates architectural movement that combines contemporary dance with acrobatics, martial arts and hip hop. After 10 years, Diavolo returns to White Bird with a dazzling program featuring Heim’s newest work Fluid Infinities, using an otherworldly dome structure to explore metaphors of infinite space, continuous movement and a voyage into an unknown future. Michael Clark Company (Great Britain)

come, been and gone. Hailed as “British dance’s true iconoclast,” Michael Clark is a defining cultural figure of the UK.  White Bird is proud to introduce the Michael Clark Company to the Pacific Northwest with Clark’s exceptional 6-member dance company performing his critically acclaimed come, been and gone, primarily using the music and video of  legendary singer-songwriter David Bowie. Clark’s rigorous yet forceful choreography echoes Bowie’s unique body language to create an evening of dance wedded to inimitable music and images.

Nederlands Dans Theater 2 (The Netherlands)

Nederlands Dans Theater is world-famous for its bold choreography and unparalleled performances. Last appearing with White Bird in 2003, NDT 2 is a brilliant ensemble of 16 of the world’s most talented young dancers that serves as the breeding ground for the main company. NDT2 will perform a wide-ranging program of dance by several of Europe’s most sought-after choreographers, Sharon Eyal and Gai Behar, Johan Inger, Alexander Ekman, and NDT Artistic Director Paul Lightfoot and Sol León.

Alonzo King LINES Ballet (California)

Thu-Sat, FEBRUARY 26-28, 2015  Newmark Theatre | 7:30pm
Visionary choreographer Alonzo King has been altering the way we look at ballet since founding his company LINES in 1982. Collaborating with noted composers, musicians, and visual artists from around the world, Alonzo King creates works that draw on deeply rooted cultural traditions. Last appearing with us in 2008 with the Shaolin Monks, Alonzo King LINES Ballet will return with a musically rich program featuring a new dance work supported by the first White Bird ‘Barney’ Choreographic Prize. *Made possible by the Dorothy Lemelson Trust and White Bird/MKG Financial Group New Works Fund.

Dance Theatre of Harlem (New York)

After a thirty-year absence from Portland, Dance Theatre of Harlem is back, and we could not be more excited. Founded in 1969 by Arthur Mitchell and Karel Shook, and now led by former DTH principal star dancer Virginia Johnson, Dance Theatre of Harlem has grown into a multi-cultural institution with an extraordinary legacy and repertoire. This legendary company will perform a boldly contemporary program by such exceptional choreographers as Ulysses Dove, Tanya Wideman and Thaddeus Davis.

Yossi Berg & Oded Graf (Israel)
Thu-Sat, DECEMBER 11-13, 2014  Lincoln Hall, Portland State University | 8pm
BodyLand. Those Israeli guys, who made such a memorable splash with 4Men, Alice, Bach and the Deer in 2011, are returning with their newest work BodyLand. Yossi Berg and Oded Graf have developed an international reputation for creating dance-theater work that is supremely physical, provocative, and full of humor. In BodyLand five men, from four different countries, address themes of body culture as well as geographical cultural distinctions that shape our thoughts and action. BodyLand is playful, daring, and totally original.

Russel Maliphant Company (Great Britain)
Thu-Sat, JANUARY 22-24, 2015  Lincoln Hall, Portland State University | 8pm
Still Current. Russell Maliphant is one of Great Britain’s most prolific and celebrated contemporary choreographers. Making its Portland debut, the Russell Maliphant Company of four charismatic, powerful dancers, including Maliphant himself, will perform Maliphant’s highly praised new program Still Current, integrating ballet, martial arts, yoga and even capoeira. Enhancing the program will be lighting design by Michael Hulls and video animation by Jan Urbanowski, who has collaborated with Lady Gaga and George Michael. A Sadler’s Wells/Russell Maliphant Production.

New Israeli Voices in Dance: Hillel Kogan & Danielle Agami (Israel & United States)
Thu-Sat, MARCH 19-21, 2015  Lincoln Hall, Portland State University | 8pm
Israel has long been a hotbed of contemporary dance, with Batsheva Dance Company at its epicenter. In a thrilling shared program, Hillel Kogan, Batsheva rehearsal director, will bring his award-winning duet We Love Arabs, involving Jewish and Arab religious identity, national symbols, and hummus! White Bird is commissioning Danielle Agami, former Batsheva dancer, to create a new work EXHIBIT b for her Los Angeles-based company Ate9 that will overflow with Agami’s strong physicality, humor and theatricality.

Urban Bush Women (New York)
Thu-Sat, APRIL 9-11, 2015  Newmark Theatre | 8pm
Celebrating 30 years, Urban Bush Women is a force of nature. Jawole Willa Jo Zollar founded the company in 1984 to showcase the energy, vitality and boldness of the African American community. After a seven-year absence, the company will return to White Bird with a stirring program featuring a new work Walking with ‘Trane, inspired by John Coltrane’s jazz suite A Love Supreme, accompanied on live piano by Grammy award-winning composer/pianist George Caldwell.


Les 7 Doigts de la Main, Sequence 8 (Canada)

Sequence 8.  From Montreal, widely considered the world’s circus center, comes the world-acclaimed Les 7 Doigts de la Main (The 7 Fingers of the Hand), whose goal is to bring circus to a human scale.  In Sequence 8, the company’s eighth and newest creation, you will exult in the acrobatic skills of 8 dynamic performers who juggle, spin and leap through the air in explosive velocity. Dorrance Dance (New York)

The Blues Project.
