"Full-bodied dancing that seems wrenched from the soul and utterly without artifice." - The Village Voice
From Finland
Daring Finnish choreographer Tero Saarinen has proven himself as one of Europe's most innovative and breathtaking dance artists, creating work inspired by diverse influences from Japanese butoh and martial arts to classical ballet and Western contemporary dance. His company makes its Portland debut with a fantastic program made up of three of his most celebrated works, including his international breakthrough Westward Ho!, Wavelengths, and HUNT - an acclaimed work set to Stravinsky's Rite of Spring that incorporates stunning multimedia projections and is danced by Tero Saarinen himself. Saarinen is recognized today as one of Europe's leading choreographers, whose work is performed by many international companies, including White Bird alums like Lyon Opera Ballet, Batsheva Dance Company, and Nederlands Dans Theater.
Special Note:
This is a change in program from that announced in White Bird's 2008-2009 Season Brochure. The Tero Saarinen Company has announced that the new work "Next of Kin" will not be coming to the United States this season.

I was so moved by the performance. The dancers were obviously well-trained but went so far beyond their training to connect with the audience at an emotional and spiritual level. Great art connects us all.
