Fifteen years ago in Portland, White Bird was launched by two guys and a bird—and the Paul Taylor Dance Company. Paul Taylor is the last living member of the pantheon that created modern dance, and he continues to create work that is vibrantly alive. Now appearing for the first time over three evenings in the intimate Newmark Theatre, this legendary company will perform an inspiring program of new and retrospective works that are set to extraordinary music and imbued with the full range of human emotion.
The exciting program will include Paul Taylor's acclaimed new work The Uncommitted as well as his joyful Brandenburgs, celebrating 25 years to the day (it premiered on April 5, 1988!). The program will conclude with Paul Taylor's fascinating treatment of Le Sacre du Printemps, using Igor Stravinsky's two-piano version, and marking the centennial of Stravinsky's masterwork. In The Washington Post, Alan Kriegsman declared "“It takes a genius to upstage another genius, and that's just about what Paul Taylor accomplished in his deliciously berserk dance version of Igor Stravinsky's hallowed, epoch-making score… Taylor uses this musical masterpiece as if it were simply a fiendishly interesting piece of music... in devising a dance charade of ever so brittle, arch and waspish humor."
The presentation of Paul Taylor's "The Uncommitted" was made possible by the New England Foundation for the Arts' National Dance Project, with lead funding from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and additional funding from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
