Garth Fagan's Masterwork "Griot New York" Makes Portland Debut, Featuring Score by Wynton Marsalis

WHITE BIRD, IN ASSOCIATION WITH PORTLAND JAZZ FESTIVAL, PRESENTS
GARTH FAGAN’S MASTERWORK GRIOT NEW YORK, FEATURING AN ORIGINAL SCORE BY
WYNTON MARSALIS AND SET DESIGN BY MARTIN PURYEAR
.

“The most blissful 105 minutes of dance any of us will be privileged to see.” -San Francisco Examiner

White Bird is proud to present, in association with the Portland Jazz Festival, Garth Fagan Dance, performing Griot New York, the legendary masterwork by Tony Award-winning choreographer Garth Fagan. The performance will take place on February 22, during Black History Month, at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall.  Featuring an original score from internationally acclaimed trumpeter and composer Wynton Marsalis and sets by renowned sculptor Martin Puryear, Griot New York, created in 1991, is “free of polemics but rooted subtly in distilled allusions to the black experience; the choreography moves with urban bustle and pastoral lyricism toward a celebration of life.” (The New York Times).
