Lyon Opera Ballet Cancels Tour But Happily Hubbard Street Dance Chicago Will Replace Lyon

LYON OPERA BALLET ANNOUNCES CANCELLATION OF
NORTH AMERICAN TOUR.

WHITE BIRD IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE THAT
HUBBARD STREET DANCE CHICAGO
WILL FILL THE FEBRUARY SLOT IN THE WHITE BIRD DANCE SERIES, VACATED BY LYON.

White Bird regrets to announce the cancellation of its presentation of Lyon Opera Ballet, scheduled for February 23, 2010, at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, the fourth company in the 2009-10 White Bird Dance Series.  However, as disappointing as that news is, White Bird is delighted to announce that Hubbard Street Dance Chicago will replace Lyon in that slot.

Lyon Opera Ballet, resident company of the Lyon Opera House in Lyon, France is cancelling their entire 2010 North American tour for financial reasons—in their words, due “to the challenging economic climate as well as to the inability to obtain funding subsidies that once were available.”

White Bird however, has contacted Hubbard Street Dance Chicago to replace Lyon, and they have agreed and are very much looking forward to returning to Portland.  White Bird last presented Hubbard Street in Fall 2005 to enormous audience and critical acclaim.  Hubbard Street Dance Chicago is internationally recognized as one of America’s most important contemporary dance companies.  Its repertory is similar to Lyon’s repertory, and in many cases shares the same choreographers, such as Ohad Naharin, Jiří Kylián, William Forsythe, among others. The new Artistic Director of Hubbard Street is Glenn Edgerton, former principal dancer with Joffrey Ballet as well as former Artistic Director of Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT).  Joining Hubbard Street in 2008, Edgerton was appointed Artistic Director in June 2009, replacing Jim Vincent, who has become the new Artistic Director of NDT.

Hubbard Street’s program for the White Bird engagement will be announced very shortly.
