"A vision of how we would all move in dance paradise."
- The New York Times
Lucinda Childs, the internationally acclaimed postmodern choreographer, makes her White Bird debut with a remounting of her seminal work DANCE. This rarely performed signature masterwork from 1979 is a landmark collaboration between Childs, one of the pillars of the Judson Dance Theater collective, composer Philip Glass and artist Sol Lewitt. Childs’ superb 11-member company sweeps across the stage as Lewitt’s fascinating black and white film of selected passages from the original performance of the work is projected onto a front scrim. A richly evocative Philip Glass score completes the not-to-be-missed experience of seeing this legendary work.

Featuring a White Bird-commissioned dance created by Portland-based choreographer Josie Moseley for “Lamentation Variations,” responses by contemporary choreographers to Graham’s classic solo “Lamentation” (1930).
Founded in 1926, the Martha Graham Dance Company is the oldest and most celebrated contemporary dance company in America. No less than revolutionary, Martha Graham (1894-1991) herself is recognized as one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century. Artistic Director Janet Eilber, who danced many of Graham’s signature roles, is designing a fascinating program for White Bird that focuses on Graham’s groundbreaking dances from the 1930’s, including the galvanizing Sketches from Chronicle (1936).

- The New York Times
New York-based choreographer Doug Elkins created Fräulein Maria after countless viewings of the movie classic The Sound of Music by Rodgers and Hammerstein. Set to the complete score of the film, Fräulein Maria premiered at Joe’s Pub at New York City’s Public Theater in 2006, and has gone on to delight audiences around the country with its marvelous deconstruction of one of the most beloved musicals in Broadway history. Ballet, hip-hop, voguing, stepping, stomping, twirling—these moves and many more appear in Elkins’ high-spirited, gender-bending and wonderfully joyful Fräulein Maria. "Movement that attacks and seduces - you watch and you are conquered."
- The Globe & Mail (Canada)
Sinuous movement. Vibrant costumes and lighting. Intoxicating music by great Brazilian and Latin American composers. There is no question that Brazil’s Grupo Corpo is one of the most popular and memorable companies White Bird has presented in its 12-year history. After a five year absence, this breathtaking company will light up the Schnitzer with its incomparable mix of classical ballet and Afro-Brazilian movement. The evening will feature Rodrigo Pederneiras’ newest work ÍMÃ, that emphasizes the versatility of the dancers amidst a polarized world marked by the familiar and strange, harmony and dissonance.

"Bursting with energy and human passion."
- The Jerusalem Post
Barak Marshall is one of Israel’s most original new voices, and with Monger, he has choreographed a highly theatrical work that uses evocative imagery and intense physicality to explore the dynamics of hierarchy, power, dignity and the compromises one makes in order to survive. Marshall draws from Jean Genet’s The Maids and Robert Altman’s film Gosford Park to create a mysterious world, enhanced by the music of Balkan Beat Box, Handel, Verdi and NPR’s Yiddish Radio Project.
